36 Hours of DUI Treatment

Who is most likely to get 36 hours of DUI treatment and what is in 36 hours of treatment? It’s a common question. Unfortunately, to truly identify who is recommended 36 hours of DUI treatment an individual will need to complete the MVD’s DUI Alcohol and Drug Screening. Luckily mental health and medical professionals have created a format to use when identifying Level 1 DUI clients. The DUI Alcohol and Drug Screening has a matrix incorporated making the outcome much more objective.Level 1 DUI clients are less likely to be identified based on opinion by setting an objective standard for screeners. The term Level 1 DUI offender is used by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS). The AZDHS categorizes DUI offenders into two categories Level 2 offenders and Level 1 offenders. Level 2 offenders are typically recommended 16 hours of DUI Education. Level 1 offenders are recommended 36 Hours of Treatment. So, according to the AZDHS, individuals most likely to be recommended 36 Hours of DUI treatment will fall into one of the following three categories.

LEVEL 2 DESCRIPTORS

First, an individual arrested or convicted of two or more alcohol or drug related offense. Keep in mind those offenses do not have to be motor vehicle related.

Second, the individual had a BAC of .15 or higher at the time of the arrest and has a one of the following supplemental events, (1) a history of alcohol and drug abuse, (2) admits to having a problem controlling their alcohol and drug use, (3) has been diagnosed with a substance abuse or organic brain disease resulting from substance abuse, (4) has experienced symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol or drug use that included hallucinations; seizures; or delirium or has  been diagnosed with alcohol related medical conditions like liver disease, pancreatitis, or cardiomyopathy by a medical professional.

Finally, the individual meets at least three of the following conditions;

  • Had an alcohol concentration of .08 or higher at the time of the arrest
  • Had been arrested or convicted for an alcohol or drug related arrest
  • Has experienced a decrease in attendance or productivity at work or school due to alcohol or drug use
  • Has experienced family, peer or social problems associated with alcohol or drug use
  • Responded during the screening in a way that indicated substance abuse
  • Previously participated in substance abuse education or treatment for problems associated with alcohol or drug use
  • Has experienced black outs as a result of alcohol or drug use
  • Passed out as a result of alcohol or drug use
  • Has experienced symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol or drug use including shakes, illness relieved by resumed alcohol or drug use; experienced irritability, nausea, or anxiety
  • Exhibits a psychological dependence on drugs or alcohol
  • Has experienced an increase in consumption, a change in tolerance, or a change in the pattern of alcohol or drug use
  • Has experienced personality changes associated with alcohol and drug use

WHAT IS IN 36 HOURS OF TREATMENT

As a result when you fit into one of the previous categories you are considered a Level 1 DUI Client and will be recommended 36 hours of DUI Treatment. The 36 hours of treatment consists of 16 hours of DUI Education and 20 Hours of DUI treatment. The 20 hours of treatment is generally acquired through group sessions. However, here at Arizona DUI Services we offer all 36 Hours of the DUI treatment online.

16 HOURS OF EDUCATION

The Arizona Department of Health Services outlines the content of the 16 Hour DUI Education. They have 11 separate items the course is required to cover. We have turned the 11 items into Five Modules.

At the beginning of the course you will take a pre-test to evaluate your current knowledge of alcohol and drug use.

The first module looks into the Physiological Effects of Alcohol and Drug Use. The module covers Alcohol, Cannabis, Opiates, Methamphetamine and Cocaine. The effects of each substance are discussed using Mental Health research and statistics. To strengthen the content we created we have carefully selected YouTube clips about your brain on Marijuana, MDMA and Drugs.

The second module covers blood alcohol content (BAC), alcohol’s impact on operating a motor vehicle, criminal penalties for a DUI conviction and alternatives to driving impaired. This module focuses on BAC. What is BAC, how is measured, and an in depth look at how the various levels of impairment. The supplemental videos in this module focus on the alternatives to driving impaired.

The third module investigates the Psychological and Sociological Effects of Alcohol and Drug Use. In this module you will look into the impact drugs an alcohol have on your mind, emotions and personality. As a result of the psychological impact of alcohol and drugs there are significant consequences socially and economically. Those consequences are discussed in the third module. The supporting videos in this module will introduce you to Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD). The introduction gives you a basic understanding into the differences of use disorders and addictions

Module four is an Alcohol and Drug Use self-assessment. This module gives you a peek into how the mental health field views both alcohol and substance use. The supplemental videos will provide an alternative perspective to addiction and help you identify some common risk factors of drug use and abuse.

The fifth and final module gives you a chance to look into various approached to AUD and SUD treatments,  treatment facilities, community resources regarding substance abuse treatment and self-help groups. One of the supporting videos will pull back the curtain and look into Celebrate Recovery.The other video explains the various stages of alcoholism.

Lastly the final hurdle of your 16 Hour DUI Education is to pass the Final exam. You will need to score a 70% to pass but will have multiple attempts should you need them. It is not uncommon for our clients to complete the 16 Hour DUI Education course in one day.

20 HOURS OF TREATMENT

For the 20 hours of group sessions we have recorded our License Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC) Robin during a few of her group sessions. There are a total of 10 videotaped sessions you will watch. Some of the sessions will have supplemental videos designed to reinforce the sessions focus. To follow along with the sessions and track your self-improvement you will download worksheets. You will have 24-hour access to the 20 hours of DUI Treatment. Having 24-hour access to the treatment puts you in control of when and how much treatment you complete each day.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEVEL 1 AND LEVEL 2 OFFENDERS

So, there you have it. Level 1 DUI Offenders will get 36 Hours of DUI Treatment. The 36 Hours of DUI Treatment is actually 20 hours of group sessions and 16 hours of DUI Education. The difference between the Level 1 and Level 2 offenders is the individual’s history of alcohol and drug use. Statistically speaking a history of drug and alcohol use increases the probability of being arrested for another DUI. The focus of the 36 Hour DUI Treatment is to provide additional information. You should use the additional information to gain a better understanding into how alcohol and drugs impact your behavior. It is to your benefit to use the information in the 36 hour DUI Treatment to create healthier habits and coping skills.

16 Hours of DUI Education

  1. Complete a pre-test to check your knowledge

  7. Final exam

At the end of each module is a short quiz which you will answer in 3-5 short sentences.

20 Hours of DUI Treatment

Upon completing all five modules there is a final exam. You are required to earn 70% on the final exam. You will have multiple attempts if need to achieve 70%.

  1. Session One of Treatment Communication – Learn different communication styles, which style you use and which style is considered the best. Look into how alcohol and substance use and abuse complicate communication. Understand the important difference of I and You statements. Lastly, learn about verbal and non-verbal communication.
  2. Session Two of Treatment Conflict Resolution – Understand how relationships are affected by alcohol and substance use and abuse. Define conflict resolution and see how conflict resolution is used in recover. Understand how conflict arises at home, work and in your relationships, how it escalates and the harm in ignoring it. Understand emotions and conflict. Learn conflict resolution techniques and the benefit of health conflict.
  3. Session Three of Treatment Managing Stress – Define stress and identify positive and negative stressful events. Discover ways to manage stress effectively through varies techniques and better habits.
  4. Session Four of Treatment Cravings and Triggers – Describe cravings and triggers. Investigate how the brain recalls alcohol and drugs. Explore methods of coping with cravings and identifying personal triggers.
  5. Session Five of Treatment Healthy Relationships – Look at what is and isn’t a healthy relationship. Identify techniques to grow healthy relationships. Recognize unhealthy habits leading to dysfunctional relationships.
  6. Session Six of Treatment Healing Anxiety and Depression – Discover clinical and practical ways you can start to heal anxiety and depression. Identify underline issues and health ways to address them.
  7. Session Seven of Treatment  Family Counseling – Watch a family counseling session and hear how drugs and alcohol effect family dynamics and can impact mental and emotional growth.
  8. Session Eight of Treatment When a Man Loves a Women – Watch a movie that unpacks complications of being married to an addict.
  9. Session Nine of Treatment Follow up to When a Man Loves a Women – Dive into the unhealthy marital relationship and learn how to overcome the dysfunction.
  10. Session Ten of Treatment Recap and resources – Take one last look at the past nine sessions, discuss the highlights and look into additional resources to help you shape healthier habits and develop coping skills.

After you complete 36 Hours of Treatment you will be emailed a certificate of completion. If the MVD or the court you are working with needs confirmation of your completed treatment we will forward them a copy of your certificate of completion.
